Dennis Oland getting emotional and wiping his eyes with a tissue at the end of direct examination by the defence at his second-degree murder trial, after testifying that he loved and misses his father. Richard Oland’s bludgeoned body was discovered face down in a pool of blood in his investment firm office in uptown Saint John on July 7, 2011.
During direct examination Dennis Oland confirming he was wearing the brown Hugo Boss jacket when he went to his father’s office on July 6, 2011 and that he bought the jacket in 2009. There were three areas confirmed for blood on that brown jacket seized from Dennis Oland’s home where the DNA profile matched that of Richard Oland.
Asked why in his interview with Constable Stephen Davidson on July 7, 2011 he said he was wearing a navy jacket on July 6, 2011. Dennis Oland replying, “clearly, I was mistaken.”
Dennis Oland testifying that his father Richard Oland always chewed on his cuticles so he’d often have dried blood marks around his fingers, and also says you’d often see scabs on the top of his head with crusty blood around it.
He testifies his family stayed at his parents house in the winter of 2010 and all of his clothing was kept there, including the brown jacket. When his parents came back from the Carribean Dennis and his family moved into the apartment over his parents garage and the clothes stayed in his father’s closet. Dennis Oland says eventually his father asked him to remove the clothes because Richard Oland kept getting confused about what was his and what was Dennis’.
