New Brunswick is getting a second area code over the next few years due to the huge demand for new phone numbers.
In addition to the current 506 area code, the new code of 428 will be introduced making 10-digit local calling necessary.
The federal regulator – the CRTC – says the second area code will be introduced in 2021.
Neighbouring Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island already have two area codes and 10-digit local calls have been required in those provinces for almost two years now.
Newfoundland and Labrador will also be rolling out a new area code in the next few years and switching to 10-digit local dialing.
