An investigator with Rogers Communications, Sylvie Gill, going through Richard Oland’s call detail records for July 6 and 7, 2011 at the second-degree murder trial of his son, Dennis Oland. The prosecution has stated the only thing missing from Richard Oland’s investment firm office in uptown Saint John, where his body was found, was his cell phone.
The last communication with cell tower information received on Richard Oland’s cell phone was a text message from his long-time mistress, Diana Sedlacek, which was sent to him at 6:44pm on July 6, 2011 and the tower pinged was at 2524 Rothesay Road, the address of the Riverside Country Club in Rothesay, near the Renforth Wharf. Gill also pointing out that Sedlacek called Richard Oland’s cell phone at 6:46pm on July 6 however that call went to voicemail.
According to Sedlacek, who has already testified at the trial, the 6:44pm text message sent to Richard was her asking him if he was there. She also sent him a message at 7:19pm asking him why he turned his phone off and threatened to call his house if he didn’t answer the phone.
In his interview with Constable Stephen Davidson, who took over as lead investigator in Richard Oland’s death, Dennis Oland said that he went into his father’s office at 52 Canterbury Street to see him at 5:30pm and left around 6:30pm on July 6. Dennis said that he stopped off at the Renforth Wharf to see if his kids were swimming there.
The trial has heard an agreed statement of facts which says on the evening of July 6, 2011, Mrs. Barbara Murray and Mr. Douglas LeBlanc saw Dennis Oland at the Renforth Wharf. He was carrying a reusable grocery bag, was wearing a sports jacket and slacks, and bent down and picked something up near the start of the wharf then walked briskly to the end of the wharf and sat down. Dennis Oland then placed the object he picked up near the start of the wharf in the bag then left the area.
Richard Oland’s bludgeoned body was discovered face down in a pool of blood on July 7, 2011.
Gill says that she received a court order in this case on July 9, 2011 for call detail records for Richard Oland. On July 15, 2011 there was another court order for records, this time, for Diana Sedlacek. This on day 37 of the trial. 65 days have been set aside at the Saint John Law Courts.
