A Syrian woman who fled the violence of Damascus three and a half years ago to make her home in Saint John is trying to ease the fears of people that ISIS members may be among the refugees coming to Canada.
Layla Rahmeh says the Syrian families who would be arriving in New Brunswick have been in closed refugee camps for several years now and have been vetted by the United Nations so the chances of ISIS members being among the refugees would be minimal.
Rahmeh says she was afraid a backlash against the refugees would occur after the attacks in Paris on Friday night.
In a letter to Prime Minister Trudeau, Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall is asking him to suspend his plan to bring 25 thousand Syrian refugees to Canada by the end of the year.
While Rahmeh says she can understand the fear, she’s asking people to overcome that with the realisation these people who are fleeing violence are helpless.
