At the second-degree murder trial of Dennis Oland the defence cross-examining a Saint John police officer about the handling of the brown jacket seized from Dennis Oland’s home one week after Richard Oland’s body was discovered.
The trial has heard the original lead investigator in the case touched the jacket with his bare hands. Constable David MacDonald testifying he was upset with Constable Rick Russell about that but doesn’t know if he voiced that. He says he did not circle the area that Russell touched and it did not occur to him to send the jacket off to see if Russell’s DNA could be found on the jacket.
MacDonald, who was the seizing officer during the search of Dennis Oland’s home, says he rolled up the jacket when seizing it and admits that could have been done better.
The prosecution has stated that four areas of blood were found on that jacket and the DNA profile matched that of Richard Oland.
