A new scam is making the rounds in Canada, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs.
They posted a warning about a phone scam where callers pretend they are from Citizenship and Immigration Canada, looking for personal information and/or money.
In the most recent version of the scam, the callers try to scare people by citing laws broken, and threatening them with arrest, jail time, loss of immigration status and even deportation – unless a fine is paid.
In other cases, victims were asked to provide personal information like date of birth, passport and social insurance number, as well as credit card and banking information.
If you receive a call like this you should hang up immediately and contact the police or the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre.
