Saint John City Council preliminarily accepting the new taxi bylaw effective May 2016.
The new bylaw will make meters mandatory, require newer cabs and better liability insurance. It will also increase fares for many typical trips.
Chair of the Taxicab bylaw committee Amy Poffenroth says meters will offer more consistent fees and lesson the likelihood of being over charged.
The general reaction by city councillors proved to be positive towards the bylaw with some criticism.
A meeting open to the public will be scheduled within the next month to give taxi drivers and owners a chance to have their opinions heard before the bylaw is finalized.
The bylaw follows years of debate comparing the current zone system versus metered fares which started in 2011.
