There’s a new strategy is place to end child poverty in Saint John. It’s called Living SJ which was developed after extensive community consultation.
One part of the strategy is to ensure 90 per cent of children in the city are able to read by the time they enter grade 3 by 2017. Roxanne Fairweather of Achieve Literacy Greater Saint John says more has to be done to get there.
Today, 79 per cent of all grade 2 students in the school district achieve the literacy standards mandated by the provincial government.
