As New Brunswickers head to the polls today, parents are taking the time to explain to their kids, what voting is all about.
Should students be taught about municipal politics in the classroom, in an attempt to ensure they cast their ballot when they are old enough?
Part Time Assistant Professor in Politics and International Relations at Mount Allison University Geoff Martin says the School districts need to ensure the teachers receive the information and training they need, “How many teachers had the opportunity to study municipal politics, or to do more than read the paper. They need modules that help with explaining Canadian provincial, federal and municipal politics.”
He says finding a fun way for students to look at politics can help them to become more interested, “What would I choose, more soccer fields, community centre, beautification of the downtown, more economic development? Students are pretty smart, they can start making arguments about one thing or another.”
Martin says there are many retired Councillors and others who have served on Municipal council, who would be happy to be guest speakers for the students as well.
