In a back and forth affair, the Saint John Vitos prevailed 7-6 over Saskatoon 7-6 to make it to the semi finals of the Telus Cup this Saturday night at 6:00. Saskatoon had to win to make the playoffs and pulled their goalie late in the game. Anderson MacDonald of the Vitos got the winner into an empty net with 1:08 left. The Vitos play Lac St. Louis this afternoon at 4:30. Lac St. Louis is 4 and 0 after winning over the North York Rangers 3-1.
The Saint John Sea Dogs play Shawinigan on the road tonight in the first game of their playoff series.
In the NHL playoffs, Patrick Kane scored on a backhander early in the second overtime and Chicago avoided elimination in the first round with a 4-3 win over St. Louis. The Blues lead 3 games to 2…..Evgeni Malkin had two goals and two assists as Pittsburgh shuts down the Rangers 5-0 to take a 3 games to one lead….Ben Bishop made 34 saves and Alex Killorn scored with less than two minutes remaining to give Tampa Bay a 1-0 win over Detroit….The Lightning win the series in 5 games…..Anaheim over Nashville 4-1 to tie up that series at two games each.
In the NBA playoffs, DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry each scored 21 points as the Raptors beat Indiana 101-85 to take a 2 games to 1 lead. Elsewhere, Houston over Golden State 97-96 but the Warriors still lead 2 games to 1 and Oklahoma City defeated Dallas 131-102 to take a 2 games to 1 lead.
In the Majors, Jake Arrieta throws a no hitter, walking 4 as the Chicago Cubs beat up on Cincinnati 16-0……Manny Machado drove in two runs including the tiebreaker in the eighth inning in Baltimore’s 3-2 win over the Blue Jays….Tampa Bay overcame a 5-1 deficit to outlast the Red Sox 12-8 and Oakland swept the Yankees 7-3.
