When should our children start learning about dollars and cents?
Senior Advisor with Maisey Financial Services John Maisey says the conversation should begin when they are very young, “Even as early as five years old. It can be explained what money is, and that it can be used as a tool, and it can be very helpful to us. We have to remember though that we know how to control money, and not have the money control us.”
Maisey notes this topic should even be introduced in schools, “It’s one of the most important topics that should be covered in school because a lot of people unfortunately get themselves into financial trouble, and it’s because they don’t have the education on it. It is something that should be taught as early as middle school and expanded upon as the students get closer to graduation.”
He says many kids grow up not knowing how to handle money, and they end up with financial troubles later in life.
