When it comes to paying their fair share of taxes, 81% of Canadians believe the top 1% are not playing ball.
So says President of Mainstreet Research Quito Maggi.
The poll was conducted after the leak and publication of the Panama Papers showing a pattern of tax avoidance and evasion.
Meanwhile, 10% believed they are paying their fair share, and the remaining 10% were unsure.
Furthermore, 6 in 10 Canadians believe foreign tax havens are very damaging to the economy.
Experts estimate the federal government is losing $7.8 billion in tax revenue each year because more than $100 billion in assets is parked in those tax havens.
One of the poll questions asked whether Canadians believed the money of the 1% was used to influence political parties, and while the results were unclear, they did reveal an interesting point of view.
The results showed 34% of Canadians believe the Conservatives would be most likely to be influenced with the Liberals at 21%, and the NDP at 17%.
Maggi adds it is possible those polled lack the financial literacy to understand the difference between tax evasion and tax avoidance, saying the latter is the reduction of taxes paid through legal means.
