Sackville Heights Elementary in Middle Sackville, has reversed its decision asking military members to attend its Remembrance Day ceremony without wearing uniforms.
The school initially made the request, communicated in a newsletter to families, in an effort to create a welcoming environment for students from conflict zones who may feel discomfort around military imagery.
However, the request drew significant backlash online, with critics expressing concern that it disrespected those who serve.
PC Leader Tim Houston was among those who criticized the decision, calling it “cowardly and insulting.” In a social media post, Houston stated, “The leaders at this school are disgracing themselves while demeaning the people who protect our country.”
Following the criticism, principal Rachael Webster issued an apology, acknowledging that the request “caused harm” and explaining that it was made with students’ comfort in mind. She assured families that the school respects what the uniform represents and that military family members are now welcome to attend in whatever attire they feel comfortable, including uniforms. Webster also invited families with specific concerns to contact her directly for further discussion.
