Basketball fans should plan a road trip to Rothesay, New Brunswick this weekend.
The third annual Milner Invitational Basketball Tournament will take place at Rothesay Netherwood School (RNS) from Thursday, Sept. 26 to Saturday, Sept. 28.
What sets this tournament apart from any other high school tournament, is this one will feature five Canadian university college basketball teams:
- UNB Saint John Seawolves (Saint John New Brunswick)
- Saint Mary’s Huskies (Halifax Nova Scotia)
- Acadia Axemen (Wolfville Nova Scotia)
- Cape Breton University Capers, (Sydney Nova Scotia)
- Thetford Filons (Thetford Mines Quebec)
- Cégep de Sainte-Foy Dynamiques (Sainte-Foy–Sillery–Cap-Rouge Quebec)
Head Coach Damian Gay stated the tournament honours the memory of Andrew Milner, a graduate of RNS and the former captain of the RNS Prep Boys’ Basketball Team.
Tragically, he lost his life in a canoeing accident in British Columbia in 2019. Hailing from Antigonish, N.S., Milner was pursuing kinesiology at the University of Calgary, where he was celebrated as an emerging talent in basketball.
Tickets to each game are 10 dollars each while it’s 20 for adults and 15 for students for a weekend pass, t-shirt will also be on sale with proceeds going to the 4 AM Basketball Camp, a non-profit that provides a scholarship.
“Our goal is to raise $1000 throughout this tournament, and a guy like Andrew touched a lot of people, so it means a lot that teams want to come to this meaningful event,” added Gay.
Gay also added there’s a possibility of having Milner’s alma mater, the Calgary Dinos travel to New Brunswick for next year’s tournament.
