Fredericton police have issued a warning about a dangerous drug circulating in the province’s capital.
Investigators said Tuesday that the drug bromazolam has been linked to a recent overdose death.
“Police suspect that bromazolam is present in the illicit drug supply in Fredericton and are urging drug users to be cautious,” police said in a news release.
Bromazolam is often mixed with street drugs, including meth and fentanyl, according to the release.
Police also warned that naloxone, an emergency medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, will not work on bromazolam.
“Bromazolam is not approved for medical use in any country and can lead to serious adverse effects, including death, especially when taken with opioids such as fentanyl,” said the release.
There are no warning signs of bromazolam’s presence as it cannot be detected by sight, smell or taste, said police.
New Brunswick Public Health first warned about the dangerous drug in late 2022 after it was detected in blood samples from nine sudden death investigations.
