An independent investigation is underway after a man suffered serious injuries following an arrest in eastern New Brunswick.
Richibucto RCMP responded to a report of a disturbance in progress over the noon hour on Sunday.
According to the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT), the man reportedly had a knife on him.
The man fled when officers arrested him but was later arrested and placed in a police vehicle.
“During transport, he suffered self-inflicted injuries and was transported to hospital, where he remains,” SiRT said in a news release.
“As a result of the serious injuries, in accordance with the Police Act, the RCMP contacted the SiRT which has assumed responsibility for the investigation.”
SiRT investigates all matters involving death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of public interest arising from the actions of any police officer in New Brunswick.
Investigations are under the direction of an independent civilian director who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid.
