Alma is getting some much-needed help to deal with its persistent water woes.
Two new wells are being built in the community, along with new water supply infrastructure.
Ottawa and New Brunswick are contributing a combined $11.4 million, while the municipality of Fundy Albert will cover the remaining $814,000.
“This project will aim to address the recurring boil water advisories that the former village of Alma has experienced over a number of years,” Albert MLA Mike Holland said in a news release.
Officials said the project will reduce turbidity levels and increase water supply to meet high demand, especially during the busy summer tourist season.
The community’s population of roughly 300 people balloons during the summer months.
Its water distribution system was “at capacity” this summer, according to municipal officials, prompting calls for residents and business owners to conserve water.
Fundy Albert Mayor Bob Rochon said the new water source and infrastructure will provide much-needed stability and predictability for residents and business owners.
“With this announcement, there is now reason for optimism,” Rochon said in the release.
No timeframe has been provided about when the new wells and infrastructure will be in operation.
