A provincial co-ordinator is being hired to help address campus sexual violence in New Brunswick.
The co-ordinator will work with publicly funded post-secondary institutions to identify their service and resource needs.
In addition, they will consult with stakeholders across the province and help institutions access funding for initiatives and projects.
“University and college campuses should be safe places to live, work and grow,” Tammy Scott-Wallace, the minister responsible for Women’s Equality, said in a news release.
“Creating this position within Women’s Equality will help to understand campus sexual violence and improve awareness and response measures.”
Working with post-secondary institutions was one of the actions identified after a roundtable on campus sexual violence in 2021.
Working group member Anne Comfort, who is also a vice president at Mount Allison University, said she is pleased to see more action being taken.
“A co-ordinator will play a key role in helping institutions identify issues and access resources to address sexual violence,” said Comfort. “We all want to provide safe environments for our campus communities.”
The government did not indicate how much the new position will cost.
