The impact of inflation has many Canadians seeking a side hustle in an effort to make extra money.
The Direct Sellers Association of Canada (DSA Canada) released research, completed by Abacus Data, revealing that inflation is driving the need for Canadians to continue their pursuit of supplemental income opportunities.
The survey discovered that while two in five Canadians (42 per cent) looked for ways to make extra money in the past year, inflationary concerns are now pushing almost two in three Canadians (64 per cent) to consider pursuing ways to supplement their income in the coming year, which is up seven per cent from 2021.
“Economic uncertainty continues to motivate Canadians to search for ways to supplement their income beyond traditional means,” said Peter Maddox, president of DSA Canada, in a news release.
“When comparing year-over-year data, the research reflects the fact that the lessening of COVID-related restrictions has introduced new economic challenges and created a need for people to enhance their income,” added Maddox.
The survey included those ranging in age from 18 to 44, individuals who are employed on a part-time basis, and students.
1,500 adults were surveyed, and the figures were weighted according to census data to ensure the sample matched Canada’s population according to age, gender, educational attainment, and region.
The margin of error for a comparable probability-based random sample of the same size is +/- 2.53%, 19 times out of 20.
