A 17-year-old has been arrested after online threats were allegedly made toward students and staff at Harbour View High School.
Saint John police said they received a complaint Sunday that an anonymous person reportedly sent “threatening and disturbing messages” to some students through a social media platform.
“The police were immediately in contact with school officials and the Major Crime Unit was
called in to investigate,” the police force said in a news release on Monday morning.
Police said a 17-year-old was arrested for uttering threats and released on conditions, which include staying away from the school. The teen is scheduled to appear in court on July 13.
The school’s principal sent an email to families on Sunday making them aware of a social media post that had been circulating.
Michael Butler sent a second email on Monday morning to say the person involved had been identified.
“Saint John Police Force are involved in this process and will be onsite this morning out of an abundance of caution and support,” wrote Butler.
“All threats to our school are taken seriously – and when we are made aware of a threat in any form we work with law enforcement to investigate fully. The earlier we know about a potential threat, the earlier the investigation can begin.”
The Anglophone South School District said classes are happening as usual on Monday, but a spokesperson deferred to the Saint John Police Force for further comment.
