An investment from the federal government will help construct a new community centre for Saint John’s rugby community.
On Feb. 2, the federal government announced a $275,000 investment through the Canada Community Revitalization Fund for the Saint John Trojans RFC.
The support will allow the Trojans to construct a new community centre next to the rugby field and Hazen White-St. Francis School.
“It’s going to have changing facilities, but also we will have a community hall that can sit around 100 people, also we’ll have a kitchen, and a lounge/recreational area where people can watch TV and stuff like that,” said Dave MacGowan, president of the Saint John Trojans.
“Our hope is we will be running summer programs out of there starting next year … part of where we’re at with the shortfall we’re also looking into putting turf in there do to some winter programing in the community hall.”
MacGowan also mentioned that there is the potential for a small amphitheater with a screen so the club can show films.
The total cost of the project is $750,000, and MacGowan said the club has already fundraised roughly $635,000, which includes the investment from the federal government.
“We have two or three other grants we are hopeful on, we’re also running our Founding <embers campaign which has been pretty successful, and we launched a GoFundMe campaign which is focused on the world rugby community.”
MacGowan added the club hopes to start construction by April 2022 and to finish the project by year-end.
