Eight regional fire departments responded on Sunday afternoon just after 3 p.m. to the Kingston Peninsula to assist Long Reach firefighters with a barn fire.
Crews from the Peninsula, Belleisle Valley, Hampton, Upham, Nauwigewauk, Kennebecasis Valley, Simonds and Grand Bay-Westfield fire departments provided mutual aid in fighting the fire at the Titus family farm on Gorhams Bluff Road.
Equipment, feed and livestock including calves and heifers were lost in the blaze, but the farm’s milking cows were rescued from the barn.
Arriving firefighters found a fully involved large barn full of hay and livestock and additional help was requested.
Due to the large amount of hay in the barn, the fire grew extremely quickly. Crews began making an exterior attack and the livestock was removed from the barn as quickly and safely as possible
A water source was established in Kingston Creek with an engine used as a hydrant truck, supplying multiple tankers which moved tens of thousands of gallons of water over the span of the evening and into the night.
Fire crews wrapped up shortly after midnight with no injuries reported by any of the assisting fire departments.
A GoFundMe page established to raise $5,000 for the family far exceeded its goal. The fundraising page had surpassed $12,000 by Monday night.
