It’s the calm before the storm this morning as we prepare for another blast of winter weather.
Winter storm warnings are in place for southeastern New Brunswick.
Environment Canada meteorologist Andy Firth says this system will start in the afternoon, but the main action will be tonight, “Snow heavy at times and blowing snow. Winds gusting out of the north to 70 kilometres per hour. We’re expecting anywhere from 20 to 35 centimetres. Higher amounts in the Moncton area than in the Saint John area, but still significant.”
Firth says there will also be very cold temperatures with this storm system, “Temperatures are really going to cool off tonight in those strong northerly winds. We’re looking at temperatures getting down in the minus 15 area by tomorrow which will give a wind chill that will be in the minus 30 range.”
It’ll all wrap up by late morning tomorrow.
Firth adds there’s nothing unusual about these types of storms at this time of year, “Just another winter storm, it’s January. before you know it, we’ll be into February, so we’re just in the mix of, every week we can probably expect some type of system. That’s pretty typical for this time of year.”
Last Friday, a winter storm shut down businesses, forced buses off the roads, and closed highways due to zero visibility in blowing snow.
Firth advises everyone to keep the snow shovels handy, “Next week, there’s another system moving in on Monday with some snow, but not as much.”
