75 per cent of the economic output within the Atlantic Region comes from ocean activities.
Huntsman Marine Science Centre wants to see more youth consider a career in this field.
Youth Education Specialist Laura Barrett said donors have made it possible for Huntsman to offer a program next spring which is focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics at a reduced cost.
“So the Ocean S.T.E.A.M. program is for high school students ages 15-18. It’s for them to come here and explore some careers that may be related to the ocean economy,” Barrett said.
Barrett said in the last few years they had donors come forward who really supported the idea of Ocean S.T.E.A.M.
“So $495 for a student a whole week so that includes your course as well as eating here and staying here. We also have a bursary program so students may be able to apply for that and get some bursary money as well to help towards the course fee,” Barrett said.
Barrett said the class size is small with about 12 students per course.
Registration is open now for the courses offered next May which are Introduction to Marine Biodiversity, Exploring Engineering Design for Ocean Application and Marine & Freshwater Environmental Sampling Methods.
The various sectors that make up the ocean economy contribute $36-billion to Canada’s G-D-P in a year.
