The search for a missing man who fell overboard from a boat in the Saint John River last week has come to a tragic end.
RCMP Sgt. Luc Samson said the body of the 70-year-old man was found in the Long Reach area on Monday evening.
“At this point in time, we do not believe that criminality is a factor in this unfortunate circumstance,” Samson said in a phone interview.
Wayne MacKenney was on a boat with friends last Thursday evening when officials say he fell overboard in the Long Reach area.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) in Halifax immediately dispatched a Canadian Coast Guard Ship and a Cormorant helicopter, along with some fire-rescue boats and the RCMP.
JRCC suspended its search on Friday afternoon and turned the matter over to the RCMP as a missing person at sea case.
“There have been many people involved in the search and the family wants to pass their sincere thanks to all that were involved,” said Samson.
An autopsy has been scheduled to determine MacKenney’s exact cause of death, he said.
