New Brunswick will provide an update on moving to Phase 2 on the path to Green just one day after entering the first phase.
Chief medical health officer Dr. Jennifer Russell and Premier Blaine Higgs are scheduled to speak during a news conference at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Public Health says 20 per cent of New Brunswickers 65 and older must be fully vaccinated to move to the second phase. That number stood at around 18 per cent on Tuesday.
Under Phase 1, which went into effect at midnight Tuesday night, those travelling from P.E.I., Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia’s Cumberland County, and the Avignon and Témiscouata regions of Québec do not need to isolate.
One of the big changes under Phase 2 is opening the Atlantic Bubble to include all of Nova Scotia, not just Cumberland County.
Travellers from elsewhere in Canada would also be exempt from isolation if they have one or both doses of the vaccine. Those with no vaccine would still be required to isolate pending a negative result from testing on day 5-7.
International travellers with no vaccine or only one dose must continue to isolate for 14 days and be tested on day 10, as per federal requirements. Fully vaccinated international travellers are exempt from having to isolate.
Anyone coming to New Brunswick from outside of the Atlantic Bubble would still be required to register their travel.
Meanwhile, Nova Scotia, P.E.I., and Newfoundland and Labrador are expected to open their borders to Atlantic Canadians on June 23.
Phase 2 will also allow restaurants, businesses and schools to operate at regular capacity while maintaining contact lists for clients (gyms, salons, restaurants, etc.) Mask use will continue to be required when two-metre distancing cannot be maintained and when people are not eating or drinking.
Vaccine Numbers
As of Wednesday morning, 75.4 per cent of New Brunswickers 12 and older had received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
That is up from 75.1 per cent on Tuesday, or an increase of more than 1,900 people, according to the province’s COVID-19 dashboard.
An additional 7,100 New Brunswickers have received their second dose of vaccine. A total of 12.9 per cent of eligible residents are now fully vaccinated, up from 11.8 per cent the day before.
