A council candidate in Saint John’s Ward 4 is looking for a recount, after a razor-thin loss in the municipal election.
Gina Hooley says her campaign has reached out to Elections New Brunswick to begin the recount process.
Greg Stewart and Paula Radwan earned the most votes after results were released Tuesday evening, with 1,141 and 1,128 votes respectively.
However, Hooley received 1,120 votes, trailing Radwan by just eight votes, and 21 behind Stewart.
She says her campaign has contacted the returning officer, and Elections NB confirmed it had received a request for a recount in that election.
Elections NB spokesperson Paul Harpelle says recounts are not automatic, but candidates who are not elected can request them if there is a difference of 25 votes or less between a candidate declared elected and a candidate who was not elected.
Before recounts can begin, Elections NB will hold declaration day later this week to make all results official.
Once results have been declared official, they will begin any recount processes.
Harpelle said they’ve already received ‘a number’ of recount requests.
