New Brunswickers will be able to take part in a wild turkey hunt for the first time this spring.
The province announced Tuesday that a limited-entry hunt will take place from May 10 to 22.
“New Brunswick’s current wild turkey population has created an exciting opportunity for hunting enthusiasts and a new avenue for economic growth,” Natural Resources Minister Mike Holland said in a news release.
According to the province, preliminary results of a recent study by the University of New Brunswick indicate there is a healthy population of wild turkeys in southwestern New Brunswick that can be managed through hunting.
A limited number of licences will be issued through a draw system, with harvest quotas being established for each wildlife zone.
Interested hunters must complete an online course on wild turkey hunting and meet the appropriate conservation education requirements before applying for the draw.
The draw application period will run from April 6 to 16.
