The incumbent Liberal MLA for Saint John Harbour will not reoffer in the provincial election.
“After much consideration early in my term, I realized that I had made a gigantic mistake, leaving Saint John Council and entering an area where I lacked direct contact with the people,” Gerry Lowe said.
In a lengthy Facebook post Tuesday afternoon, Lowe said he enjoyed the constituent work of being an MLA.
“I enjoyed working on my riding problems through the office with my manager Wayne (Wink) Melvin, which mostly centred around homelessness, and much needed, better housing. But when it came to Fredericton, everything was so political,” Lowe said.
In response to the announcement of a general election in September by Blaine Higgs, I wish to announce that I will not…

Lowe said he supported the decision made by the Liberal caucus to not proceed with stability talks.
“I agree that the caucus on Friday made the right decision to leave the negotiations. If we had stayed, the only option allowed to us would have been for the Conservatives to act as a majority government with absolutely no opposition from any other party. This is not a democracy; I stand behind the decision made by the Liberal Government 100%,” Lowe said.
Lowe narrowly won the riding of Saint John Harbour in the 2018 provincial vote, besting Progressive Conservative candidate Barry Ogden by a mere 10 votes.
The close race was debated over several months in court, where Lowe was eventually determined the winner.
Hours before Lowe declared he would not be running again, Ogden announced his intention to once again put his name forward for the PC nomination.
