Dr. Margaret Anne Smith has been named the next president of St. Stephen’s University.
A news release from the university says Smith brings fresh leadership, new direction, and plans for a changing world.
“We are in a time of great change in our society and I think we need places like SSU now more than
ever,” said Smith in the release.
“Our students need us, and the world needs our students — prepared to face uncertainty and change equipped with an understanding of the past, compassion for all people, a desire for justice and beauty, and hope for the future.”
Dr. Smith has more than 20 years of teaching experience at St. Stephen’s University and UNB Saint John.
Smith said she wants SSU to be a university which addresses the needs of the communities it is part of.
“Many people are feeling the need for a societal re-set and the desire to question many ways of doing
things,” said Smith. “I hope we can find ways to continue caring for one another and our students, but
also use this time to look to the world around us, ask difficult questions, and help find new answers.”
St. Stephen’s University is known as the smallest liberal arts university in Canada.
