2000 runners will gather in Saint John for Marathon by the Sea on August 10th and 11th as the event marks its 25th anniversary.
The race, which is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon, has participants this year from the Atlantic provinces, fourteen U.S. States and from Italy, Germany, France and Sweden.
Christy Cunningham of the marathon’s organizing committee says again this year, one participant is joining the run from the water.
“A cruise ship is docking on Sunday at 8 a.m. and one man is going to run off the boat and do the half-marathon,” Cunningham said.
Cunningham says they can take volunteers and anyone who wants to register right up until race weekend.
“If someone is looking to volunteer there are lots of opportunities. We always need people out on the course and there are things to do back at the cruise ship terminal in terms of registration and handing out medals.” Cunningham said.
Marathon by the Sea includes a full marathon, half-marathon, 10km, 5km, Kids runs and the Into the Night run at dusk on Saturday, August 10th and when the first runner crosses the finish line, fireworks go off.
Events are coordinated through the Diamond Jubilee cruise ship terminal.
