The tenants of a west Saint John duplex got a rude wake-up call when a fire broke out on a deck overnight.
Eighteen Saint John firefighters responded to the scene at 373-375 Duke Street West just after 1 a.m. Wednesday.
The fire started on a rear deck and moved up to the eavestrough of the building.
Crews had to remove some shingles to make sure the fire did not extend.
Firefighters were on the scene for about two-and-a-half hours and the building suffered minimal damage.
The entire building did have to be ventilated because of smoke.
One woman was sent to the hospital to be checked out.
The tenants of the duplex should be allowed to return home Wednesday.
