The assistant returning officer for the riding of Saint John Harbour testified Tuesday at the trial involving results from last fall’s provincial election.
Liberal Gerry Lowe defeated Progressive Conservative Barry Ogden, but Ogden wants the results overturned alleging voting irregularities.
Tammy Dunlop spoke of being hired in early 2018, attending election training that summer and setting up the returning office at Prince Edward Square mall in September.
Dunlop also worked during the 2015 federal election and the recent municipal byelection held last month in Saint John.
Ogden’s lawyer, Kelly VanBuskirk, asked her about speaking with Chief Electoral Officer Kim Poffenroth about the competency of Saint John Harbour returning officer Pat McCaffrey.
His technological challenges surrounding email and other office functions were discussed.
If McCaffrey was replaced, Dunlop said she would become returning officer and her role would be filled.
Dunlop said she wanted it to be more of a shared role.
VanBuskirk asked Dunlop if she was calling the chief returning officer to complain about McCaffrey.
She said it wasn’t complaining, but if someone from Elections New Brunswick contacted her looking for something, she would take care of it.
Dunlop said the conversation happened on September 12 — about two weeks before the election.
