Federal funds will provide a Saint John charity with an easier way to help children use their services.
On Tuesday, Saint John-Rothesay MP Wayne Long announced $32,000 from the Enabling Accessibility Fund for an exterior elevator lift at the Shining Horizons Therapeutic Riding Association in Red Head.
Dave Ryan says it will help them in getting anyone using a wheelchair to mount the horses. He explains how it works now.
“We just basically lift them up to help them mount the horses but, this will make things a lot easier to get them to the level where the horse is,” Ryan said.
Thanks to our MP Wayne Long and his team for assisting us to get our Therapeutic Riding Centre moving towards completion. Much appreciated by all.

He says they plan to add another lift in the future.
“We are looking to put in a second lift on the inside of the facility where will be able to sort of cantilever them out of the wheelchair and onto the horse as well.” Ryan said.
Ryan says some of the children riding horses in the program have physical disabilities while others are autistic.
He says the horses have an ability to bring the kids out of their shell.
The funding will also be used to build an accessible parking lot.
