The East Coast Games in Saint John are nearing their fifth anniversary.
The 2019 edition being held next month features softball, rugby, lacrosse, track and field and ultimate frisbee, basketball, cricket, cycling and beach volleyball.
Co-chair Keith Raynes says in the first year they started out with seven sports and 750 athletes.
“This year we are looking at twenty sports and close to 2500 athletes and participants coming June 21st to the 23rd.”
The East Coast Games also features the Kids of Steel triathlon at Rockwood Park on June 22nd.
Co-chair Dave McPherson says the rugby event on Friday, June 21st includes matches featuring the women’s senior league playing at Hazen White-St. Francis and at UNB Saint John.
“Also at UNBSJ, we are going to showcase Atlantic Super League and that will be New Brunswick Spruce versus Nova Scotia Celtic and that will be men’s. That’s the top rugby players that play in Eastern Canada.” McPherson said.
The honorary chairs this year are Nancy Morrison and Jack Brownell.
Morrison spent 20 years as the athletic director for KV High while Brownell coached at Saint John High and also served as recreation director for the City of Saint John.
Co-chair Keith Raynes says a lot of people know them and maybe haven’t had a chance to see them because their paths don’t cross.
“The East Coast Games give them an opportunity where we have a lot of mini opening ceremonies at different sports and we’ll have the honorary chairs there,” Raynes said.
