A staple of the Shoppes of City Hall has closed after thirty years in business.
Treats cafe in the pedway closed and owner Kim Beckett tells us he bought the restaurant eight years ago.
“I took it over and it was the first time in the food business for me. It was interesting. The business was not doing that well when took it over but, it got there and it was starting to do well for years. In the last couple of years, things started to fall apart.”
He cites many reasons for the decline in business including the departure of offices around him such as the judges, court staff and police moving out of the City hall office tower.
Beckett also says he was surrounded by competition and he calls the decision to close “disappointing”.
“I put a lot of effort in that and you could see it starting to grow and then all of a sudden it’s not growing anymore. When that happens you just have to shut the doors because if you keep it open you are just going to run into financial disasters.”
He owns other Uptown businesses including Barbour’s General Store and he has a stall in the white tent on Water street that serves cruise ship passengers.
In addition to Beckett, three other people worked at Treats full-time.
