The Mayor of Sussex thinks 16 new jobs at Nutrien is “amazing news” for his town.
The company will increase its workforce to 50 thanks to a deal with the provincial government to provide road salt.
Thorne says the addition of these jobs also preserves the assessed value of the property which he says is very important for the local economy.
“What a lot of people don’t think about is that property assessment plays a very important role for the local property rates for the local services all around us,” Thorne said.
Thorne says if the mine ever re-opened it would be welcome news but, the town is not making any plans around that possibility.
Don Doney of Nutrien says these last three years have been a stressful time for the community, the facility and the employees.
He says by working together they came up with a great solution to keep employment in the Sussex-area.
“Maintaining 50 employees at our facility to mine road salt as well as continuing with the decommissioning of potash infrastructure is a significant development for the status of this operation,” Doney said.
He thanks the many government departments involved in working hard to get a deal made.
