After some tough times, a bit of positive economic news for the Sussex-area.
In January 2016, the former PotashCorp announced it was closing resulting in more than 400 job losses.
On Monday in Penobsquis, Sussex-Fundy-St. Martins MLA Bruce Northrup revealed the province has reached a deal with Nutrien to provide road salt and create 16 new jobs.
“16 new jobs may not seem like a lot of jobs, but 16 high-paying jobs in rural New Brunswick can make a real difference in this area,” Northrup said.
16 new jobs will be added to Nutrien in Sussex. They will be the supplier of road salt for all DTI operations.

Northrup says this agreement will put local companies first, grow the economy and support provincial workers.
“Currently there are still 34 jobs still in place here at the mine which has been in care and maintenance mode but, with this agreement the numbers will reach approximately 50 in the very near future”.
The province buys about 180,000 tonnes of road salt per year and for the last two years, it’s been outsourced from Nova Scotia and Quebec.
Schools, municipalities, hospitals and the private operators of Routes 1 and 2 can buy salt through the government’s contract.
Decommissioning of Nutrien’s potash operations will carry on as planned.
Energy and Resource Minister Mike Holland says soon after taking on his new post, Bruce Northrup spoke to him many times about projects in his area with this one being the #1 priority.
