Log benches, reading tipis, a pergola and greenhouse are just some of the green projects that helped Samuel-de-Champlain school win $20,000 in a national contest.
Samuel-de-Champlain is one of 10 schools across Canada who are winners in the 2019 Superpower your School Contest.
Teacher Melissa Beaupre tells us in recent years some of the students hosted workshops for the younger students.
“They planted some seedlings. The younger kids could also see how it works and they transplanted them in the greenhouse. That is another project that we have done, we built a greenhouse and it’s fully functional with automatic vents,” Beaupre said, “we built a community garden with over 10 raised beds. Some of our community members and church members are included in this garden so this way we have some veggies ready for everybody.”

Teacher Marcel Ringuette says some students were able to participate in the construction of the trail system behind the school.
“We built a 20-foot bridge and the kids were able to see how it was built. They get to learn things they don’t learn inside the school in class.”
Melissa Beaupre says they plan to buy solar panels, cameras for security and some Imax cameras for taking footage and pictures to help them market the project.
Hampton Elementary School also won $20,000 in the contest.
