You can find him in National Geographic, Time Magazine, Forbes, CBS, and at the Fundy Discovery Aquarium.
Lucky, the cotton-candy colored lobster, is now a viral star after his picture was shared on Instagram, and proceeded to catch the attention of the world.
Aquarium Manager Cynthia Callahan tells us they are very fortunate many local fisherman contact them when they catch something special, “Instead of selling it, they would like to see it used for education, and this is no different. It was not long before Christmas (2017), Robinson Russell, a lobster fisherman in Grand Manan came up with Lucky. He knew he had something pretty special right away. So they displayed it at a local restaurant in Grand Manan for a few days, and then he gave us a call to see if we’d be interested in giving Lucky a home.”
Callahan says it’s quite funny how things turned out, as they did announce having Lucky in November, but the Aquarium was closed for the season at the time. She says until just recently, because of social media and his picture being shared on Instagram, they can’t keep track of the media requests.
“He was on display all through March Break. We’ve always loved him, he’s on our rack card for the aquarium, so we not been hiding him, but I think this is just an interesting thing about social media because someone picked it up about eight or nine days ago and it’s gone kind of viral since then.”
As for why Lucky is so beautiful in his unique coloring, Callahan says there are two ways a lobster can end up with a funny color. The most common would be a genetic mutation, where one or more of the pigments won’t be expressed, which she says is a natural mutation that happens all the time in all organisms. The other reason could be because of diet, but Callahan says Lucky’s colors are so extreme its almost certainly a genetic mutation.
You can see Lucky the cotton-candy lobster on display, in his very own tank, at the Fundy Discovery Aquarium everyday from 10am-5pm.
