A partnership between Bobby’s Hospice and two local redemption centres continues to be a huge success.
The Golden Mile and Grand Bay-Westfield redemption centres recently presented two cheques totalling nearly $70,000.
Both redemption centres have teamed up with Fero Waste & Recycling to collect donated redeemable beverage containers.
Mike Hamilton, who owns and operates the centres, said they have three collection bins set up throughout the Saint John region.
They include the Golden Mile Redemption Centre on Linton Road in west Saint John, the Grand Bay-Westfield Redemption Centre on Highland Road, and at Kennebecasis Park Elementary School in Rothesay.
“For every container that someone donates, every pop can, water bottle, juice box they donate, we’re able to contribute 10 cents towards Bobby’s Hospice,” Hamilton told our newsroom in an interview.
According to Hamilton, just over $250,000 has been donated to Bobby’s Hospice since the partnership began in 2018.
The bins are accessible 24 hours a day, meaning residents can drop off their recyclables when it is most convenient for them.
Hamilton said the initiative is important as Bobby’s Hospice relies heavily on donations and partnerships.
“They help all sorts of different individuals in probably the hardest time in their entire life. Coming to the end and helping them greet that with dignity and honour,” he said.
“At the end of the day, it’s not us as the redemption centers that are doing it, but it’s the great people in Grand Bay, out in Rothesay, out in Saint John that are donating their redeemables.”
