A staple of the Saint John City Market has closed its doors after more than three decades in business.
Billy’s Seafood Company made the announcement in a post on its Facebook page Tuesday afternoon.
“I started the Market when I was 17 years old. It will always be a part of who I am,” Owner Billy Grant wrote in the post.
Grant said the restaurant and fish market weathered many challenges in recent years “with major personal sacrifices, hard work, and our dedicated staff.”
That included major market renovations, the pandemic, and the loss of patio revenue due to work next door at 99 King Street.
“We have now realized that the business is simply not viable and must now close effective immediately,” wrote Grant.
“Welcoming you into our restaurant, and being part of the uptown community, has been an honour and privilege. I thank everyone who has supported us over the years.”
The post has already received dozens of comments from people sharing their experiences at Billy’s Seafood over the years.
City ‘saddened’ to learn of closure
The City of Saint John, which owns and operates the Saint John City Market, issued a statement about the closure late Tuesday afternoon.
Officials said they were saddened to learn of the immediate closure, adding that Billy’s Seafood has been a staple of the community and added to the “vibrancy of both the City Market and uptown.”
“It is challenging for small businesses in today’s climate, and we want to recognize the dedication, friendly service, and hard work of the team at Billy’s,” said the statement.
“Their passion and commitment have been evident in everything they’ve done, and we thank them for serving residents and visitors for so many years.”
The city said it remains committed to supporting local businesses and working with its partners to build a strong, sustainable business environment.
It encouraged the community to continue showing their support for the many vendors at the City Market and throughout the city.
“To the owners and staff of Billy’s Seafood, we express our heartfelt appreciation. Your presence at the top of the Market will be deeply missed, and we wish you all the best in your next chapter.”
