Saint John-Rothesay MP Wayne Long is reconsidering his decision not to run in the upcoming federal election.
Long had announced in early 2023 that he would not put his name forward for a fourth term.
However, the MP now says he will run again if Mark Carney is elected as the next Liberal leader.
He has been inspired by Carney’s leadership, which has re-energized him and made him feel more included within the party.
“Somebody like Mark Carney will have his hand on the wheel. He knows how to build an economy, he talks with confidence and he’s got the experience,” Long said.
Mark Carney, a former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, is known for his experience in managing economic crises.
Long emphasized that Carney’s leadership could shift the focus from slogans to substantial economic management.
The member of Parliament also highlighted the need for a new vision and leadership within the party.
He compared the situation to a sports team needing a change in leadership to perform better.
“Mark Carney’s new, he’s fresh, he’s got worldwide experience and he wants to focus on building and rebuilding Canada’s economy to be one of the strongest in the G7,” Long added.
Long will make a final decision on his candidacy in the next few weeks.
