The New Brunswick Museum (NBM) entered the construction phase of its Revitalize NBM project on Monday.
A groundbreaking ceremony took place at the museum’s Douglas Avenue location in Saint John.
The museum will undergo partial reconstruction and expansion, ensuring that its historical facade remains intact. The entire process is projected to take approximately two and a half years, aiming for a grand reopening in 2027.
The project represents a partnership that includes both the provincial and federal governments. New Brunswick is putting in $58 million, Ottawa is adding $49.9 million to the mix, and museum Board Chair Tracy Clinch said they look to contribute $40 million through their ongoing capital campaign.
“We are building more than just a museum, we are creating a space where our past meets our future, where learning and inspiration will thrive,” said Clinch.
“Our new home will be a community facility that embraces sustainability and innovation and embodies our commitment to preserving and celebrating New Brunswick’s rich natural and cultural heritage.”
When finished, the 134,000-square-foot facility will house research, exhibition and community spaces under one roof, including a café, boutique and library.
