With an above-average hurricane season expected, federal officials say we need to be prepared.
The remnants of tropical storm Debby impacted millions of people in eastern Canada late last week.
“We saw significant power disruptions in Quebec, road closures and flooding in Quebec and Ontario and significant rainfall,” Rural Economic Development Gudie Hutchings told reporters Monday.
Hutchings said it served as a reminder that Canadians need to be prepared for hurricane season.
Hurricane forecasters in the United States are predicting an above-average season this year.
“The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted up to 24 named storms, that’s tropical storms, 13 hurricanes and seven major hurricanes,” said Hutchings.
While hurricane season runs until the end of November, most tropical cyclone activity occurs between mid-August and mid-October.
