Another 180 housing units could soon be coming to Saint John’s east side, pending council approval.
City council approved the first and second readings of the required rezoning last week for the project at 50 Heather Way, near Grandview Avenue.
The developer plans to construct five 24-unit apartment buildings and 12 five-unit townhouses on the site.
Mark Reade, a planner for the city, said there is a mix of residential buildings in the immediate area.
“You have single-family houses along Wyatt Crescent, there are townhouses in the area, there are similar scale apartments and larger scale apartments as well,” said Reade.
Developer Bill Dunnett is also in the process of building 11 apartment buildings on the other side of Heather Way. Four buildings have already been completed with construction on the fifth underway.
Dunnett said they want to complete those buildings — which will likely take another five or six years — before starting to construct the apartments on the second site.
While the buildings on the initial site are being completed, he said, the plan is to start constructing around 10 townhouse units per year on the proposed site.
“If the market stays as hot as it is, maybe we’ll do them quicker. We may even consider speeding up the timelines on the apartment buildings,” said Dunnett, who noted the buildings are generally full before they are even finished.
The application will go to a third reading at a future council meeting.
