To ensure everyone’s safety during the summer, RCMP says it’s vital for scooter riders to learn, understand and follow the rules.
Mounties say scooter riders must respect the same rules outlined in the Motor Vehicle Act when using New Brunswick roads.
Key provincial regulations to operate a scooter include:
- Be 14 years or older
- Always wear a helmet
- Not be under the influence of drugs or alcohol
- Always ride alone (this includes no towing of another vehicle, cycle, or other devices, including another scooter)
- The scooter cannot be modified in any fashion
- Cannot exceed 60 km/h unless equipped with an adequate headlamp that can light a distance of 100 metres
- Must use roadways (cannot use any type of path or sidewalks)
Officers also say municipal bylaws for scooters may vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, so it’s important to familiarize yourself with the bylaws of the community you are riding.
“Some additional rules apply to people under the age of 18, for example, they would require a Class 9 licence as well as parental consent, as with any driven vehicle, users must signal their intentions at all times, either with a signal light or with hand and arm signals before turning,” said an RCMP news release.
Police ask you to call your local detachment if you see a dangerous or suspected impaired driver, and give a description of the driver, vehicle, licence plate number and direction of travel.
