Nearly three dozen more residential units are being planned for Saint John’s Waterloo Village neighbourhood.
Developer Michael Wowchuk is looking to rezone the former Roman Catholic Diocese offices on Bayard Street.
Wowchuk plans to create 25 residential units in the existing building with an eight-unit addition to the rear of the building in a future phase.
Coun. David Hickey said this project would be a welcome addition to the neighbourhood.
“Waterloo Village has very quickly become the frontline of our housing and mental health crisis,” said Hickey.
“Investment in housing like this is what’s going to position our community for success in the long run.”
Common Council passed the first and second reading of the proposed rezoning during Monday’s meeting.
The developer said in his application that he hopes to have the project completed by January.
“What a great use of a building that’s already there that’s sitting there empty,” said Coun. Paula Radwan.
“Hopefully other people will be looking to do projects like Mike and his crew.”
