Changes could be coming to your property assessment notices in the next couple of years.
The province has proposed revisions to the Assessment Act it says will modernize and streamline property assessment services.
“The changes we are proposing will further enhance the assessment function and align with international best practices by allowing us to capture up-to-date information and generate accurate assessment values for property owners,” Service New Brunswick Minister Jill Green said in a news release.
Starting in 2025, assessment notices would be based on Jan. 1 of the preceding year rather than Jan. 1 of the upcoming taxation year.
To support the change, assessment notices that are usually mailed in October will start being sent out in January, starting with the 2024 taxation year.
You will still have 30 days to request a review of your property’s assessed value.
“Sending notices in January will close the gap from the time property owners receive their assessment notice and tax bill and allows a more accurate reflection of the current state of the property,” said Green.
The proposed changes will not affect tax bills, which will continue to be mailed in March.
