A pet supply store in St. Stephen is stepping up to help our furry friends in Charlotte County.
Harper’s Exotic Animals and Pet Supply has donated more than 1,100 pounds of cat food to the Charlotte County SPCA.
Owner Doug Harper said it is their way of giving back to a community that does so much for them.
“We’re a huge donation kind of business. We take most of our profit and we give back to the community,” said Harper. “We’re not looking to get rich.”
The pet supply business usually donates about 200 to 300 pounds of food to the SPCA every couple of months, depending on their need.
But Harper said this is the largest one-time donation they have ever made to the animal rescue organization.
The most recent donation consists of 72, 16-pound bags of food which, according to Harper, average between $80 and $90 a bag.
“We take care of exotics, they take care of the furry animal side of things. It’s great to be able to help them out when they’re short on food,” he said.
Anne Gagne, vice-president of the Charlotte County SPCA, said their organization is beyond excited by the donation.
As a volunteer non-profit charity, Gagne said donations are critical in helping them to keep operating.
“We don’t have any government funding, we rely solely on donations. People of Charlotte County have been very generous,” said Gagne.
Gagne said the donated food will be used for animals currently in the shelter and for their new pet food bank.
Casey’s Cupboard was named after a beloved dog at the shelter who passed away back in 2021.
The program provides support to struggling pet owners to help them keep their furry friends at home.
“It’s a trend we’ve seen across North America of shelters and animal rescues attacking the problem from both sides, from the animals that are already strays and trying to prevent other animals from having to look for new homes,” said Gagne.
Meanwhile, Harper said he hopes his donation will encourage others in the community to step up and lend their support.
